Vietnam Bar Federation Celebrates 80 Years of the Legal Profession: Upholding Justice in a New Era

On the evening of October 9, the Vietnam Bar Federation solemnly held a ceremony at the Hanoi Opera House to mark the 80th anniversary of Vietnam Lawyers’ Day (October 10, 1945 – October 10, 2025). Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong attended and delivered a keynote speech, recognizing the vital contributions of lawyers to the building of a socialist rule-of-law state.

In his address, President Luong Cuong emphasized that over the past eight decades, Vietnamese lawyers have been closely aligned with the nation’s struggle for justice, human rights, and the protection of lawful interests of individuals, organizations, and the State. “Lawyers are the backbone of justice, helping strengthen people’s trust in the rule of law,” he said.

The legal profession in Vietnam traces its roots to Decree No. 46/SL, signed by President Ho Chi Minh on October 10, 1945, which laid the foundation for the country’s organized legal practice. From only a few dozen lawyers at the beginning, Vietnam now counts more than 21,000 lawyers and over 6,000 law firms operating within 34 bar associations nationwide.

According to Do Ngoc Thinh, President of the Vietnam Bar Federation, lawyers today play an increasingly diverse role—not only defending clients but also advising on business matters, engaging in policy feedback, and contributing to lawmaking and international legal cooperation.

However, President Cuong also pointed out that the profession still faces challenges. A few lawyers have violated professional ethics, undermining the credibility of the bar. He called on the federation to modernize its management model, promote transparency, and “resolutely eliminate those who abuse the lawyer’s title for personal gain.”

Looking ahead, he urged the legal community to continue improving professional competence, embracing digital transformation, and deepening international integration to better serve justice and the people.
